Minidoka Scholarship

The Minidoka Pilgrimage Youth Scholarship program offers young people the opportunity to participate in the healing, active remembrance, and community spirit that the Minidoka Pilgrimage is known for. Scholarship recipients get to attend the pilgrimage for free and volunteer before, during and after the pilgrimage with planning, assisting elder survivors, setting up programming and more. The program is a chance for descendants to connect with their community and understand their history, and for those outside the JA community to learn about an American story that is too often forgotten.

The Kansha Project

The Kansha Project is a JACL Chicago program founded in 2011 that connects self-identified, Japanese Americans, ages 18-25, from the Midwest to their identity, history and community.

Participants engage in an in-depth examination of the WWII confinement site experience through an immersive educational trip to Los Angeles’ historic Little Tokyo neighborhood and Manzanar National Historic Site. Through workshops with local experts and community activists, historical tours, and group reflections, participants work to interpret and promote the stories, lessons, and the legacy of the Japanese American confinement site experience.

The Kansha Project typically occurs every summer in June, and applications open in January. There is a small participation fee for accepted participants, but all costs for travel, lodging, food, and admission during the program are covered.
