Why a Virtual Pilgrimage?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic all the annual pilgrimages to the Japanese American incarceration sites were canceled. Recognizing that the pilgrimages provide important educational and community-building opportunities, we began work on “Tadaima! A Community Virtual Pilgrimage” as a way to bring together both descendants of the camps and the general public. Tadaima! was hosted on the Japanese American Memorial Pilgrimages (JAMP) website over the course of nine themed weeks.
What is a Virtual Pilgrimage?
“Tadaima! A Community Virtual Pilgrimage” is a collaborative undertaking, involving representatives from many different contingents of the Nikkei community along with scholars, artists, and educators committed to actively memorializing the history of Japanese American incarceration during World War II. “Tadaima!” means “I’m home!” in Japanese. “Tadaima!” is our way of expressing we are all home and acknowledging the important concepts centered around being home. “Tadaima!” also celebrates the history, diversity, strength, and vibrancy of the Nikkei community.
Our goal for “Tadaima!” is to create accessible and wide- ranging opportunities for learning, sharing stories, and building community. “Tadaima!” is not a site-specific virtual tour. Rather, Tadaima!” brings together many of the unique traditions from each site with new content. Spread across nine themed weeks, the 2020 Tadaima Virtual Pilgrimage featured pre-recorded and live-streamed content as well as opportunities to engage with presenters and gather online as a community. “Tadaima!” features online exhibits, workshops, performances, lectures, panel discussions, film screenings, a community archive, and more.
